Testing: Laura Mercier Flawless Fusion Ultra-Longwear Foundation

I'm always trying to find the absolute perfect base for my make up. I find if you can't get the base right, then you have to work twice as hard to get the rest of your face looking how you want. So when I hear rave reviews about a foundation, that seemingly ticks all the boxes on my foundation wishlist, it takes a bulldozer to stop me trying it. Enter, Laura Mercier's newest base addition.

So if you saw yesterday's video you will have seen my first impressions and reactions for applying the foundation and how it sat on the skin. If you haven't then I'll pop it here for you. I also go through the details, but in case you missed it here's the low down on the product.

The Laura Mercier Flawless Fusion Ultra-Longwear Foundation is a liquid foundation, that gives a medium to full coverage with a matte finish. You get 30ml for £35 (yup, a pricey one), and from what I can see you have a choice of around twenty shades. It's also supposed to last up to sixteen hours. Now, let's run through my thoughts.

APPLICATION
Although it says apply with a sponge, I did actually find it easier to get a smooth even finish with a really dense brush - I've found the best one so far has been the Real Techniques Sculpting Brush.  Also, it dries really quickly so you have to work fast in terms of blending - I'd say do small areas at a time to make sure the finish looks good. I think this product does take a little bit of work to make it look flawless, and even, however when you get there the results are stunning. It just takes a bit more work than other foundations I've tried.

FINISH
So the finish is definitely matte - I think if you have dry skin this is one you need to avoid. My nose is slightly dry and the foundation does show this, not in a really obvious way but if you look up close you can see a difference in the finish in drier patches than other areas of skin. Elsewhere though, it is pretty flawless. Once it dries down and settles I love it. I just wish it looked like that on my entire face, because it does annoy me that it looks patchy in areas - especially considering the price. I think if you have all over oily skin or normal skin this would be a winner, but if you have combo skin like me it's probably not going to sit right.

LASTING POWER
One word. Insane. The first day I wore this I wasn't doing much more than mooching about the house, and doing some housework, but when I looked at my face maybe nine hours after application, my skin still looked flawless. And all of my make up on top of it, was still in place and as strong as it was on application. The next day I did have a panicked speed walk down to my local petrol station with it on, and usualy foundations with that activity would be a little bit glowy, or super shiny after, and basically not look great. This - hadn't budged. No shine, no breaking up, no budge. So I was super impressed on that front.

COMBINATION
By combination, I mean how well did it work with other products going over the top of it. And honestly, really really well. With some liquid foundations I do find that occasionally when you put products over the top they move around a little bit - especially if you haven't set them or let them dry, or if they're liquid or cream products themselves. However, I think because this dries so quickly, there's not an issue here at all. Concealers go over the top and blend nicely, liquid bronzers or highlighters blend beautifully but still give their full strength of pigmentation, and powders don't look cakey over the top. So overall, it plays really well with others.

Overall - I'm kinda on the fence. It does take a little bit more work to get the cover I'm after, and make sure it's all even and smooth, and even then it doesn't sit quite right on drier areas. And I'm not like super dry either, but it just shows were the skin isn't quite even. I think this would be the perfect foundation if you have oily skin, or if you need something for a wedding or a long night out. For me, I just don't think it's worth the price tag - I'd much rather use my Dior Forever foundation as it gives a much more even finish, but I'm going to keep playing with it and see if I can find a way to really make it work. I definitely prefer it when using a really dense brush, so I think that's the way forward with it but we'll see how it all goes!

Much love, Lisa May x
